Privacy policy

In short: your trips, tracks and photos stay on your phone. Only what you choose to share goes to the server.

This policy covers the Trace Map app (Android and iOS, ID space.tracemap.app) and the trace-map.space website. Version of 3 October 2026.

What stays on your phone

  • Trips, route lines, points, schedules and recorded tracks.
  • Photos attached to the trip diary — the app takes them from your gallery or camera only when you ask it to.
  • Settings, pace, emergency contact and downloaded offline maps.

There is no sign-up and no account. None of this is sent to us unless you send it yourself.

Location

Location is used to show you on the map, record your track and check off route points. In field mode recording continues in the background with the screen off — otherwise the track would stop in your pocket. Background recording runs only while a hike is started and stops when you tap “Finish”. Coordinates are written into the track on your phone and are not sent anywhere unless you hike together with others.

What goes to the server

  • Maps and trail routing. The app requests map tiles and trail-snapped lines through our server. A request contains the map area or route points and your IP address; the IP is used only to protect the server from overload.
  • Elevations. To build elevation profiles the app sends route point coordinates to the Open-Meteo service.
  • Hiking together and shared routes. Only if you turn on “Share routes & live location”. The server then stores the route you shared, your display name, marker colour, a device ID and — while you are in a group — your latest position: coordinates, altitude, heading, speed and battery level. Only people with the join code can see it. Shared routes and groups are deleted after 30 days, and your position stops being sent when you leave the group.

What we don’t do

We don’t sell data or pass it to ad networks, don’t show ads and don’t profile you. The app contains no third-party analytics.

Website

The website uses no cookies and no trackers. The host (Firebase Hosting, Google) processes technical request logs, including IP addresses.

Deleting data

Delete a trip or the app and the data on your phone is gone. Group data is removed when you leave the group and in any case after 30 days. To have it removed sooner, write to us.

Children

The app is not intended for children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their data.
